The lighthouse cliff at continental Europe's southwestern corner has been collecting sunset-watchers since antiquity, when the ancients supposedly believed the sun hissed into the water here at the world's end. The nightly gathering at the wall is now a small institution, complete with an enterprising bratwurst van. It is windy essentially always; bring a layer even in August.

The Algarve's highest point faces the Atlantic west, and on a clear evening the sun goes down over the Costa Vicentina with the whole south coast lit at your feet. In summer the summit is many degrees cooler than the beaches, which is either the warning or the entire point.

The Citadella ramparts at golden hour
The reopened fortress terraces face west over Buda and east over Pest, so sunset works twice: the light dropping behind the Buda hills, then the blue hour as the Parliament, the bridges and the castle switch on their floodlights one by one. Free since the March 2026 reopening, and the best all-of-Budapest frame there is. Bring a layer; the hilltop wind is real.

The Chain Bridge and the corso at dusk

The quiet alternative, an hour south of the resort belt: a crumbling Portuguese fort on a cliff at the top of Goa's wildest stretch of coast, with a small church inside the walls, a sheer drop to the sea and almost no infrastructure. Fewer people here at sunset than at Chapora on a Tuesday afternoon. Take the road slowly and leave before it is fully dark.

An Old Quarter rooftop bar
The Old Quarter has no view at street level, so it built one upwards: a run of rooftop bars on the taller hotels looking across the tiled roofs to Hoan Kiem Lake on one side and Long Bien Bridge on the other. The Sunset Bar over West Lake
The pier bar at the InterContinental, built out over the water on its own jetty so there is nothing between the table and the horizon. Non-residents can walk in for a drink, which makes it the easiest way to buy the best sunset position in Hanoi for the price of one cocktail.

On a Friday the square at the lake's northern tip is the moment the weekend begins: the barriers go across at seven, the traffic drains away, and within twenty minutes the tarmac belongs to skateboards, badminton, hip-hop crews and toddlers in electric cars. Less a sunset than a shift change, and better than most sunsets.

Punnamada Lake by shikara
A small covered boat, an hour or two before dark, out of the Alappuzha jetty and north into Punnamada where the snake boats race in August. The houseboats are heading in to moor, the light goes orange over open water, and you can go into the small canals a big boat cannot reach. Around 600 to 800 rupees an hour for a small boat is the going rate, and it is the cheapest good hour in the region.

The wide water at Kumarakom
Kumarakom faces west across the broadest part of Vembanad, which means the sun goes down over open water with nothing in the way. From a resort lawn, a jetty or the deck of a small boat, this is the postcard sunset of the backwaters and it needs no ticket and no plan. Stay for the twenty minutes after the sun has gone, when the whole lake turns the colour of the sky.

Marari beach
A long, straight, palm-backed beach on the Arabian Sea where the fishing boats come in at the end of the day and the sunset is unobstructed all the way to the horizon. Walk north from the resort strip until the umbrellas stop, which does not take long. The contrast with the enclosed green light of the canals is the reason to give this coast a day.

A Bukit Bintang rooftop

The Grupo Habita rooftop behind the cathedral serves its evening drinks to non-guests too, and the view is point-blank: the bell towers and dome at arm's length, the Zocalo's flag beyond, the Templo Mayor excavation below turning gold. Monumento a la Revolucion's copper dome
The 1938 monument, the largest triumphal-arch-scaled dome in the hemisphere and a Deco masterpiece, runs a glass elevator up its leg to a lookout under the copper cupola: 360 degrees over Reforma's towers with the evening rush drawing light-lines down the avenues. Less famous and less crowded than the Torre Latino, open into the evening, and the plaza below with its fountains is the after-show. Pair it with dinner back in Juarez or Roma, both a short ride.

The Angel and Reforma at golden hour
Paseo de la Reforma runs close enough to east-west that the low sun fires straight down it, and the Angel de la Independencia catches the last light gold on her wings above the roundabout. Walk the avenue from the Diana fountain as the towers light up, or claim a west-facing rooftop bar along the corridor. On Sunday mornings the same avenue closes to cars and fills with bicycles, the city's best free urban ritual, so the Angel bookends both ends of a day well.

The Sea Caves at Cape Drepano
North of Coral Bay the coast breaks into a shelf of undercut limestone with the sun going down straight ahead and Agios Georgios chapel on the headland behind. Nothing is fenced, the rock is sharp and the drops are real, so stay back from the edges and bring shoes.

Paphos harbour and the castle
The easiest one, and better than it has any right to be: the fort sits on the quay with the fishing boats in front of it, the sun drops over the breakwater, and the floodlights come up on the stone a few minutes later. Walk it rather than sit in one of the harbour-front chairs.

The Akamas coast above the Baths of Aphrodite
The last kilometre of paved road past Latchi looks west along the whole peninsula, so the sun sets down the length of the Akamas with Chrysochou bay behind you. The car park at the Baths thins out by late afternoon and few people stay for this.
