Sri Lanka · Uva Province, the Sri Lankan hill country
Ella
Get your free ETA online before you fly: Israeli passport holders have been on the free 30-day list since 25 May 2026, but the authorisation must still be issued before arrival. From Colombo airport it is about 234 kilometres to Ella by road. For the train, drive or ride to Nanu Oya and take the 09:00 departure, daily, which reaches Ella at 11:27, or the 14:30, not on Wednesdays, which arrives at 16:57; seats open 30 days ahead on the Sri Lanka Railways reservation site. In Ella, walk to the Nine Arch Bridge for a morning train, climb Little Adam’s Peak, and do Ella Rock early, from late September to mid-March for a sunrise at the top. Take a tea-factory tour, spend a day in Haputale for Lipton’s Seat and the Benedictine monastery at Adisham, which opens only at weekends and on holidays, and give Horton Plains an early start. Plan for rain from October to December, and for the driest weather from June to August.
Overview
Ella is a small town about 1,000 metres up on the eastern edge of Sri Lanka’s hill country, in the province of Uva, and it is one of the most popular stops on a Sri Lanka round trip. It sits at the head of the Ella Gap, a notch in the mountains where the land drops away towards the southern lowlands, with Ella Rock on one side of the town and Little Adam’s Peak on the other. The railway from the highlands passes straight through it and, a few kilometres further on, crosses the Nine Arch Bridge in a valley of tea and jungle. Around it lie the tea estates of Uva, the cliffs of Haputale and Lipton’s Seat, the cloud forest of Horton Plains and some of the tallest waterfalls in the country. For an Israeli reader Ella is also familiar ground: it is a regular stop for Israeli travellers, with a Chabad house in town. This year it needs a new plan. Cyclone Ditwah, which struck at the end of November 2025, cut Sri Lanka’s railways in hundreds of places, and as of late September 2026 the famous train from Kandy to Ella still does not run end to end.
Go to Ella for the walks and the tea, not for a sunset, and plan the train around what actually runs. This season the famous ride starts at Nanu Oya, not Kandy, and it is still worth it: the section through Pattipola, the highest station on the line, and down past Haputale to Ella is the most dramatic part of the whole route. Book seats 30 days ahead; the timetable in this guide is the official one from 20 June 2026. Then use the geometry we computed. The summit of Ella Rock, at about 1,350 metres, sees the sun rise over the lowlands up to six minutes before the almanac time every day from 29 September to 14 March; for the rest of the year the Namunukula foothills take it by up to seven minutes. Little Adam’s Peak, the easier climb, loses 12 to 22 minutes at sunrise for most of the year and only sees the sun near the almanac time between mid-November and late January. Lipton’s Seat, at about 1,905 metres, is the one sunrise in this guide that is early all year, by one to seven minutes. Down in the valley, the Nine Arch Bridge only gets direct sun from about 06:30 to 07:30 until about 16:20 to 17:15, depending on the season, so the late-afternoon train often crosses it in shade. These are computed figures, good to about two minutes; trees are not in the model.

Daily itinerary
3 to 5 days
Almost everything people say about Ella needs a date on it this year. The Kandy to Ella train, the stretch most itineraries are built on, is only half back: trains have run between Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, and Badulla via Ella since 20 June 2026, but the line from Kandy up to Nanu Oya is still under repair, with reopening dates given as late 2026 or early 2027. Still, the highest part of the ride, past Pattipola, Ohiya, Idalgashinna and Haputale, is running daily. The weather is the second surprise. Station records for Badulla and Bandarawela show that June to August are the driest months here, overlapping the July to September weeks the Sri Lanka Tea Board calls the Uva quality season, while October to December are the wettest. And Ella faces east. We ran every sunrise and sunset of 2026 against the terrain: the town loses the evening sun 21 to 49 minutes early behind its own hills, while the summit of Ella Rock sees the sun come up over the lowlands, before the almanac time, from the end of September to mid-March.
Best time to visit
Ella sits on the eastern side of the central mountains, and its weather is not the weather most Sri Lanka guides describe. The south-west monsoon, from May to September, soaks Nuwara Eliya and the western slopes, but Uva lies in its rain shadow: in the WMO 1991-2020 normals, Bandarawela, the nearest long-running station at about 1,226 metres, averages 90 mm of rain in June, 71 in July and 68 in August, against 347 in October and 338 in November. Badulla, lower down, is drier still, with 52 to 72 mm a month from June to August. So June to early September is the driest time in Ella, and from July it overlaps the Uva quality season for tea. January to March is the other good window, often clear in the mornings. October to December is the wet season here, with the second inter-monsoon and the start of the north-east monsoon, and it is when landslides close roads and railways. Temperatures change little: in Bandarawela the average daily high runs from about 23C in December and January to 27C in May, and nights are around 15 to 18C, so bring a warm layer for dawn hikes.
- January to March: Drier than the monsoon months, especially February, which averages 96 mm at Bandarawela, with cool nights. Ella Rock has its open sunrise over the lowlands until 14 March. Little Adam’s Peak sees the sun rise within a few minutes of the almanac until late January. Busy, because this is peak season on the coasts.
- April and May: April is wet, with thunderstorms of the first inter-monsoon: 236 mm at Bandarawela on average, over about 18 days. Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls in mid-April, and many Sri Lankan families travel then. May is warmer and a little drier.
- June to August: The driest months in Ella by the WMO normals; from July the Uva quality season for tea begins, when the dry winds give Uva tea its character. Nuwara Eliya, on the other side of the ridge, is wet at the same time, so expect cloud on the train at the top of the line and sun at the bottom. July and August are busy with European visitors.
- September: Wetter than August, about 165 mm over 13 days at Bandarawela. From 29 September the Ella Rock summit sees the sun rise over the lowlands before the almanac time.
- October to December: The wet season in Uva, with the heaviest rain of the year and the highest landslide risk. Check the Disaster Management Centre’s situation reports and the railway notices before you travel. Cyclone Ditwah struck in late November 2025.
Things worth knowing
- Poya days: every full moon is a public holiday in Sri Lanka, and alcohol is not sold. The remaining dates in 2026 on the published bank-holiday list are 25 October, 24 November and 23 December.
- Sinhala and Tamil New Year (mid-April): the country’s biggest family holiday; trains, buses and hill-country hotels fill with Sri Lankan travellers.
- Esala Perahera in Kandy (July or August, by the lunar calendar): the great procession of the Temple of the Tooth, a long day from Ella by road while the Kandy line is closed.
- Uva quality season (July to September): the Sri Lanka Tea Board’s name for the dry-wind weeks that give Uva tea its most prized character.
Where to stay
Ella town
One main street along the Wellawaya road, with the railway station just above it, lined with cafés, guesthouses, tuk-tuk stands and tour desks. Everything in the town is on foot: the station, the start of the walk along the tracks to Ella Rock, the path to the Nine Arch Bridge and the road out to Little Adam’s Peak. It is lively and very much built for travellers, with Western food and late bars next to rice-and-curry places. Chabad Ella is at Club Villa.
Best for: No car · Cafés and evenings out · Arriving by train · Short stays
Noisy, crowded and more commercial than the valleys around it. The town sits in a bowl: by our terrain model the sun reaches the main street 12 to 38 minutes after the almanac sunrise and leaves it 21 to 49 minutes before sunset, the earliest in December and January, when it is gone by about 17:05.
The Ella Gap and Waterfall Road
The slopes south of the town where the land falls away through the Ella Gap towards the lowlands and the Wellawaya road winds down past Ravana Falls. The hotels here are built for the view: The Pinnacle Ella, EKHO Ella and Zion View on Waterfall Road and Sandungama Road, and Ravana Heights on the Wellawaya road at the top of the pass. Most are a 5 to 15 minute walk from the main street, uphill on the way back.
Best for: Views down the Ella Gap · Couples · Sunrise from the balcony
Steep lanes and many steps. These slopes face east and south: they get the morning sun and lose the evening early, by our model 43 to 90 minutes before sunset at The Pinnacle’s height on the hillside.
Passara Road and Little Adam’s Peak
The road east from the town towards Passara, through tea estates, with the trailhead for Little Adam’s Peak, the Flying Ravana zipline, 98 Acres Resort and a string of hotels and restaurants spread out along the mile posts. It is greener and quieter than the town, and the path to the Nine Arch Bridge from this side starts here.
Best for: Tea-estate hotels · Little Adam’s Peak at dawn · Families
Hotels further out, such as Chill Ville at the 6 Mile Post, are a tuk-tuk ride from town. The road is narrow, with little pavement.
Jacob Riesel · PexelsDemodara and the Nine Arch valley
North-east of Ella the railway drops through tea and forest, crosses the Nine Arch Bridge and then spirals around itself at Demodara, where the line passes through a tunnel directly beneath the station. It is the quiet side of Ella, with a few estate bungalows such as Nine Skies and the viewpoints above the bridge.
Best for: The bridge before the crowds · A private tea bungalow · Railway history
Little to walk to in the evening; you need a tuk-tuk into town. The bridge valley is deep and shaded for the first hour after sunrise.
The Ambadandegama valley and Ravana Falls
South-west of Ella, below Ella Rock, the valleys around Kirindi Oya and Ambadandegama have tea farms, rivers and forest, and the Wellawaya road passes Ravana Falls on the way down. AMBA Estate, an organic tea farm with rooms, is here, with the nearest railway station at Heel Oya.
Best for: A tea farm stay · Walkers · Quiet
About half an hour’s drive from Ella on small roads; power cuts in storms; few restaurants beyond your hotel.
Haputale and Lipton’s Seat
A ridge-top town at about 1,430 metres, 22 kilometres west of Ella by road, where the hill country ends in an escarpment above the southern plains. From here a road climbs through the Dambatenne estate to Lipton’s Seat, and a side road leads to Adisham, the Tudor-style bungalow that is now a Benedictine monastery. The planter’s bungalow Thotalagala and, further west at Beragala, Melheim Resort are the grand stays.
Best for: Sunrise at Lipton’s Seat · Tea estates · Quiet, cooler nights
Haputale town itself is plain and busy with traffic. Mist often closes in by mid-morning. The trains stop here, so it is easy to combine with Ella.
Koslanda and Diyaluma
South of Haputale on the road down to Wellawaya, Koslanda is lower, warmer and wilder, with forest, paddy fields and Diyaluma, at 220 metres one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Living Heritage Koslanda, an eco-lodge on 80 acres of protected forest, is the reason most travellers stay.
Best for: A secluded eco-lodge · Waterfalls · A slower pace
About an hour by road from Ella. Warm and humid compared with the hills, and you depend on your lodge for meals.

Essential experiences
Ravishka Bhashitha · PexelsThe train from Nanu Oya to Ella
The reason many people come. The hill-country line climbs from Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, to Pattipola, the highest station on the line, then runs through Ohiya, Idalgashinna and Haputale and down past Bandarawela to Ella in about two and a half hours. Cyclone Ditwah cut the line at the end of November 2025; the Ambewela to Nanu Oya track alone failed at 78 places. Trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla via Ella have run again since 20 June 2026, but as of late September 2026 the section from Kandy up to Nanu Oya was still closed, with reopening dates given as late 2026 or early 2027. The official timetable from 20 June: from Nanu Oya at 09:00 daily, arriving Ella 11:27, and at 14:30 except Wednesdays, arriving 16:57; from Ella towards Nanu Oya at 09:52 except Wednesdays and at 15:52 daily. On Wednesdays the Ella Odyssey special replaces the 14:30 from Nanu Oya and the 09:52 from Ella, leaving Nanu Oya at 13:00 (Ella 15:21) and Ella at 08:43. All carry first-class air-conditioned and second-class reserved seats, bookable 30 days ahead. Do not lean or hang out of the open doors for photos: the line runs through tunnels and rock cuttings, and in February 2025 a tourist died after falling from the train while taking a selfie between Badulla and Hali Ela.

Malik Cil · PexelsThe Nine Arch Bridge
A stone, brick and concrete viaduct of nine arches, about 91 metres long and 24 metres high, that carries the railway on a curve through a valley of tea and forest between Ella and Demodara stations. It was completed around 1919, and the line reached Badulla in 1924. From the town it is about a 650-metre walk to the start of the forest path, then around 900 metres more; you can also come down from the Passara road side. Recent travel reports mention no entrance fee. A story that went round social media in 2026 about a new crack is misleading: the National Building Research Organisation found no structural cracks or major defects when it inspected the bridge in October 2025, only minor seepage from blocked drains, and Ella’s station master told fact-checkers in August 2026 that trains cross normally. Under the current timetable trains cross a few minutes after leaving Ella going down, around 11:30 to 11:40 and 17:00 to 17:10, and a few minutes before reaching Ella coming up, around 09:40 to 09:50 and 15:40 to 15:50, with different times on Wednesdays. By our terrain model the deck gets its first direct sun only between about 06:30 and 07:30 and loses it between about 16:20 and 17:15, depending on the season, so the late-afternoon train often crosses in shade, most of all from September to January.
Little Adam’s Peak
The easy summit: a pyramid-shaped hill of about 1,141 metres south-east of the town, reached by a path through tea from the Passara road. From the trailhead it is about 2 kilometres there and back with around 120 metres of climbing, 30 to 45 minutes; from the town centre about 4 kilometres return. There is no fee. The top looks straight down the Ella Gap and across to Ella Rock. For sunrise, our model has the Namunukula foothills, about five kilometres east, taking the sun 12 to 22 minutes late for most of the year; only between mid-November and late January does it rise within five minutes of the almanac time. At sunset the hills to the west take it 7 to 15 minutes early.
Ella Rock
The big walk. Ella Rock is about 1,350 metres high, roughly 300 metres above the town; the often-quoted 1,041 metres is the height of Ella town, not the rock. The usual route follows the railway south from Ella station for about 2 kilometres, 30 to 35 minutes, to the footbridge near Kital Ella station, then climbs through tea, eucalyptus and forest; allow three to four hours return. The paths split and many people hire a local guide. A fee of roughly 900 to 1,000 rupees for foreigners is collected near the top; sources disagree on the exact amount, and a ticket point there was added to OpenStreetMap in March 2026. The railway is not a footpath: walk beside the track, not on it, keep clear of the bridges and cuttings, and remember that works trains do not appear in the passenger timetable. In the dark, go with a guide or take a tuk-tuk to Kital Ella station. By our model the summit sees the sun rise over the lowlands up to six minutes before the almanac time from 29 September to 14 March, and up to seven minutes late the rest of the year, behind ridges six to eight kilometres east.
Uva Halpewatte tea factory
The working tea factory above Ella, on a hill at about 1,250 metres north-west of the town, is the easiest place to see how Uva tea is made. The Halpe tea company runs a guided factory tour with tasting for 3,000 rupees, a plantation tour for the same price and a handmade-tea masterclass for 9,000, in slots from 08:00 to 16:30. OpenStreetMap gives the hours as Monday to Saturday, so check before going on a Sunday. The Sri Lanka Tea Board describes Uva tea as “exotically aromatic”, with its best season from July to September, when the dry winds of the south-west monsoon reach the eastern slopes.
Lipton’s Seat and the Dambatenne estate
At about 1,905 metres on the ridge above Haputale, the viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton is said to have surveyed his estates looks out over the southern plains to the coast. The road climbs through the Dambatenne tea estate, past the Dambatenne tea factory, to a toll point below the top; a small bus runs up from Haputale. Mist usually rolls in by mid-morning, so go for sunrise. This is the one sunrise in this guide that comes early all year: by our model the sun rises one to seven minutes before the almanac time over the lowlands, with the sea beyond the east coast as the geometric horizon on the clearest mornings. The Pekoe Trail’s stage 14 starts here, 9.4 kilometres down to Makulella; some Pekoe Trail sections closed after the cyclone, so check that it is open before walking it.

Adisham Bungalow, St Benedict’s Monastery
A Tudor and Jacobean country house built between 1927 and 1931 for the planter Sir Thomas Villiers, three kilometres from Haputale in the forest, and now a Benedictine monastery. Visitors see only the library and living room, and the kiosk sells jams, pickles and cordials made by the monks. It opens only on weekends and on public and school holidays, from 9:00 to 16:30. The fee was 500 rupees in late 2023; check at the gate. Beware adisham.org: the domain is no longer the monastery’s.
Horton Plains and World’s End
A high plateau of grassland and cloud forest at about 2,100 to 2,300 metres, a national park since 1988 and part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage property inscribed by UNESCO in 2010. A loop walk passes Baker’s Falls and World’s End, where the plateau drops about 870 metres in one cliff; World’s End is about 4 kilometres from the trailhead, and this is one of the few parks in Sri Lanka you can walk without a guide. The gates open at 06:00. Go early: the view from World’s End is usually clearest before about 9:00, before the mist comes up. Bags are checked for plastic at the gate. The foreign adult fee is about USD 25 before taxes and charges; published figures disagree, so check at the gate. Access was blocked for a time after Cyclone Ditwah; check with your driver that the roads up from Ohiya and Pattipola are open, above all from October to December.
Ravana Falls
A waterfall of about 25 metres beside the Wellawaya road, six kilometres below Ella station in the Ravana Ella wildlife sanctuary, named after the demon king of the Ramayana. It is loud and full after rain and thin in the dry months. Ravana’s Cave, on the hillside nearer Ella, has yielded evidence of people living there tens of thousands of years ago. The Ella to Wellawaya road that passes the falls is prone to landslides in heavy rain; a slip at Karandagolla blocked it in March 2025.
The Demodara loop
A few kilometres past the Nine Arch Bridge the railway turns a full spiral to lose height: the loop is about 900 metres long and passes through a 320-metre tunnel directly beneath Demodara station, at 912 metres, which opened in March 1921. You can watch a train enter the tunnel below the platform and come out on the other side of the hill. Trains going down pass Demodara about 14 minutes after Ella.
Dowa Rock Temple
A Buddhist rock temple beside the Badulla to Bandarawela road, a few kilometres from Ella, which tradition dates to King Valagamba in the first century BC. Its best-known feature is an unfinished standing Buddha about 11 metres tall carved into the rock face, with painted caves beside it. It has been a protected archaeological monument since 1996. Dress for a temple: shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off.
Buduruwagala
Seven figures carved into a rock face in the forest south of Wellawaya, generally dated to the ninth or tenth century and of the Mahayana school, with a central standing Buddha about 16 metres tall. It lies in Monaragala district, about 35 kilometres from Ella by road, and pairs well with Diyaluma on a day down the Wellawaya road. We could not confirm the current fee and hours; pay at the ticket office by the approach road.
Diyaluma Falls
A 220-metre waterfall beside the A4 between Haputale and Wellawaya, near Koslanda, usually called the second highest in Sri Lanka. From the road you see the full drop; a path climbs to the upper falls, where there are rock pools above the edge. We found no official rules for swimming up there. The pools sit above a sheer drop of about 220 metres, the rock is slippery after rain, and the water can rise fast when it rains upstream; keep well back from the edge, go in daylight with a local guide and do not camp, or stay on the lower viewpoint.
Flying Ravana zipline
A twin-wire zipline of more than half a kilometre across the valley below Little Adam’s Peak, reaching about 80 km/h by the operator’s figure, with an ATV track and a swing on the same site. Foreign adults pay 9,900 rupees for the mega zipline and children under 16 pay 6,000, on the operator’s rate card.

Rice and curry
The everyday meal of the island: red or white rice with several small curries, most of them vegetable, dhal and a sambol. In Ella the family-run places cook it best at lunchtime.
Kottu roti
Chopped godamba roti stir-fried on a hot plate with vegetables, egg or meat, onion and chilli; you hear the clatter of the blades before you see the stall. The name comes from the Tamil for “to chop”.
Hoppers and egg hoppers
Thin, bowl-shaped pancakes of fermented rice batter and coconut milk, crisp at the edges; an egg cracked into the middle makes an egg hopper. A breakfast and evening food.
String hoppers
Rice-flour dough pressed into fine noodles, laid in small flat nests and steamed, eaten with curry and pol sambol at breakfast.
Pol sambol
Freshly grated coconut pounded with shallots, chilli, lime and salt, often with Maldive fish; it comes with almost everything.
Dan arndt · CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia CommonsLamprais
The Dutch Burgher dish of rice cooked in stock with a mixed-meat curry, sambols and frikadel meatballs, wrapped in a banana leaf and baked. It belongs to Colombo, but Café Chill serves it in Ella.
Uva tea
The tea of the eastern slopes, which the Sri Lanka Tea Board calls exotically aromatic. It is at its most distinctive in the quality season from July to September, and it is what Lipton sold to America.
Rice and curry is a lunch dish; in the evening the menu turns to kottu, hoppers and fried rice. Many small places are cash only. Eat Sri Lankan food with the right hand if you want to eat it the local way, though every tourist restaurant has cutlery. Bills in hotels and larger restaurants usually add a service charge of up to 10 percent and VAT, which has been 18 percent since January 2024.

Sunrises
Ella Rock summit
The best sunrise in Ella from late September to mid-March. By our terrain model the summit, at about 1,350 metres, sees the sun come up over the lowlands up to six minutes before the almanac time every day from 29 September to 14 March. From mid-March to late September the Namunukula foothills six to eight kilometres east take it by up to seven minutes, which still makes it the least blocked of the Ella viewpoints.
29 September to 14 March · The first two kilometres follow the railway line, which is not a footpath: walk beside the track, keep clear of bridges and cuttings, or take a tuk-tuk to Kital Ella station. A fee of roughly 900 to 1,000 rupees is collected near the top. · The lowlands sit under haze most mornings, so the disc often appears a little above the geometric horizon.
Little Adam’s Peak
The easy dawn climb, 30 to 45 minutes from the trailhead. By our model the sun rises within five minutes of the almanac time only from 12 November to 29 January; for most of the rest of the year the ridges about five kilometres east hold it back by 12 to 22 minutes, so first light comes well before the disc.
Mid-November to late January
Lipton’s Seat
The one sunrise in this guide that comes early all year: by our model one to seven minutes before the almanac time, over the lowlands and, on the clearest mornings, towards the sea beyond the east coast. Mist usually closes in by mid-morning.
Clear mornings from January to March and June to August
Sunsets
Little Adam’s Peak
The easiest evening summit. By our model the hills to the west take the sun 7 to 15 minutes before the almanac sunset, the most around the equinoxes. The descent is short, but bring a torch.
June to August, the driest months
Ella Rock summit
Higher, and a better horizon: by our model the sun sets behind the Haputale and Horton Plains ranges 20 to 38 kilometres west, 4 to 10 minutes before the almanac time. We do not recommend it: the descent through the tea and along the railway takes about two hours, in the dark after sunset.
Only with a guide
The 98 Acres terrace
Dinner with the valley below: by our model the western hills take the sun 7 to 18 minutes early here. A good place to watch the light go off Little Adam’s Peak.

Getting around
- Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is the gateway. No Tel Aviv to Colombo flight appeared on the Ben Gurion flight board for 28 September to 2 October 2026, and we found no announced direct season for winter 2026/27; Arkia flew the route non-stop over the autumn holidays of 2025. Most Israelis connect through a hub.
- Israeli passport holders have been on Sri Lanka’s list of 40 nationalities that receive a free 30-day tourist ETA since 25 May 2026, with double entry. The ETA must still be issued online at eta.gov.lk before you fly.
- By road, Ella is about 234 km from the airport and about 134 km from Kandy. Most visitors come with a car and driver.
- By train: as of late September 2026 trains from Colombo ran only as far as Rambukkana, and the line from Kandy up to Nanu Oya was still being repaired after Cyclone Ditwah. Trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla via Ella have run since 20 June 2026. Reach Nanu Oya by road, about 81 km from Kandy, and board there.
- Walk: the town, the station, the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and the start of Ella Rock are all on foot.
- Tuk-tuks wait on the main street. Ride-hailing apps such as PickMe work poorly in Ella; agree the fare before you set off.
- The train is also local transport: Haputale, Bandarawela and Demodara are all short rides from Ella.
- For Horton Plains, Lipton’s Seat at dawn, Diyaluma and Buduruwagala, hire a car and driver for the day.
