Koh Phangan
Thong Sala for the pier, the Saturday walking street, the hospital and the island's best restaurant. Ban Tai and Ban Khai for the south-coast road, Fisherman's and the Half Moon venues. Haad Rin for the party and, on the other side of its neck, a calmer swimming beach. Srithanu, Hin Kong and Haad Chao Phao for yoga, sunsets and the west-coast villages. Haad Yao and Haad Salad for the classic beach-and-reef bays. Chaloklum for fishing boats, dive boats and the longtail to Bottle Beach. Thong Nai Pan for the two best beaches and the top hotels. Ang Thong, Koh Tao and Sail Rock for the days on the water.

Koh Phangan is the island between Koh Samui and Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, 125 square kilometres of granite hills, coconut plantations and about thirty named beaches, most of them small bays with a headland at each end. The world knows it for one thing, the Full Moon Party on Haad Rin, which happens twelve or thirteen nights a year and fills the southern tip with 10,000 to 30,000 people. The rest of the time it is a quieter, greener and cheaper island than Samui, with no airport, a working fishing village at Chaloklum in the north, a strip of yoga schools and vegan kitchens at Srithanu on the west coast, a pair of beaches at Thong Nai Pan in the north-east that hold the island's best hotels, and a national park across the middle with a waterfall, a 627 m summit and a royal history that goes back to 1888. It is also home to a sixteen-seat tasting-menu restaurant run by an Israeli chef who moved to the island in 2023, and to a Chabad house with a kosher kitchen, which tells you something about who has been coming.
Pick the month before the beach. February to April is the window we would book: the north-east monsoon has blown out, rainfall at the Samui station falls to 46 to 64 mm a month, the sea is flat, Ang Thong is open and visibility off Koh Ma and Sail Rock is at its best. Late June to early September is the second choice, warm and mostly dry while the Andaman coast is wet, with the sea a little rougher. Avoid late October to early December unless you are coming for the moon: November is the wettest month by a distance, the marine park is closed and the boats to Bottle Beach and the east coast stop running in a swell. Then decide about the party. If you want it, expect the minimum stay and the no-check-in rule on the days either side, and stay at Haad Rin for that stretch only. If you do not, stay on the west coast and you will barely notice it. Either way, arrive with the digital arrival card filed and a plan for 30 days, because since 15 September 2026 that is what the visa exemption gives you.
Best for
Couples who want a beach with a village behind it · Two-island trips with Samui or Koh Tao · Snorkellers and divers, with Sail Rock an hour away · Yoga, retreats and a long slow month · The Full Moon Party, once · Value: the same sea as Samui at a lower price
Daily itinerary
5 to 8 days
Two calendars run the island and neither is the one on your phone. The first is the moon. The Full Moon Party dates are set by the Haad Rin business association, and they move the whole island's economy: boats fill, Haad Rin hotels impose minimum stays of three to five nights around each date and seven over New Year, and the day after, the island empties out. The remaining 2026 dates are 26 September, 27 October, 24 November, 24 December and 31 December; 2027 opens on 22 January. The second calendar is the monsoon, and it runs the opposite way to Phuket's. The Gulf coast gets its rain from the north-east monsoon in the last quarter of the year: the NOAA record for the Ko Samui weather station averages 312 mm in October, 495 mm in November and 270 mm in December, against 46 mm in April, so the European summer, which is Phuket's wet season, is dry and calm here, and November, which is Phuket's first good month, is the month the Ang Thong marine park closes to boats. We computed the sun as well: from the west coast between Hin Kong and Haad Yao the sun sets into open water from March to mid-October, and from late October to late February it goes down onto or beside the Ang Thong archipelago, a low dark line 32 to 36 km out, with its tallest islands under the disc for a few weeks each winter on dates that shift with where you stand; the Thong Sala pier loses the sunset behind the small island of Koh Tae Nai for half the year, and Chaloklum and Bottle Beach lose theirs behind their own hills.
Best time to visit
Koh Phangan is hot and humid all year, with daily highs between 29C in December and January and 33C in May and June at the Ko Samui station, and lows between 24C and 26C. Rain is the variable, and it is concentrated in the last quarter: the station's record is patchy, but its monthly averages over the years it reported between 1991 and 2025 run 94 mm in January, 51 in February, 64 in March, 46 in April, 122 in May, 153 in June, 120 in July, 152 in August, 124 in September, 312 in October, 495 in November and 270 in December. The rain in May to September comes as afternoon storms between sunny days; the rain in October to December comes as the north-east monsoon, with days of grey and a sea that cancels the small boats. The Andaman coast, Phuket and Krabi, runs the other way, wettest from May to October, which is why the two coasts are so often combined.
- January to February: Highs about 29C, rain falling from 94 mm to 51 mm. The sea calms through January. Full Moon Parties on 22 January and 22 February 2027. Peak prices until the end of February.
- March to April: Our pick: the driest months, 64 and 46 mm, highs 30 to 32C, flat sea, best visibility at Koh Ma and Sail Rock. Songkran 13 to 15 April. Parties on 22 March and 21 April 2027.
- May to June: The hottest months, highs about 33C, with afternoon storms: 122 and 153 mm. Still swimmable and the marine park is open. Parties on 21 May and 19 June 2027.
- July to September: The Gulf's dry summer: 120 to 152 mm a month while Phuket gets twice that. Warm, some wind and swell on the west coast. Parties on 20 July, 17 August and 15 September 2027; the next one from publication is 26 September 2026.
- October: The turn: 312 mm on average, the north-east monsoon arriving in the second half. The party is on 27 October 2026. The marine park closes on 1 November.
- November to December: The wettest stretch, 495 mm in November and 270 mm in December, with rough seas and cancelled longtails. Ang Thong reopens around 16 December. Parties on 24 November, 24 December and 31 December 2026.
Things worth knowing
- Full Moon Party, Haad Rin: 26 September, 27 October, 24 November, 24 December and 31 December 2026; then 22 January, 22 February, 22 March, 21 April, 21 May, 19 June, 20 July, 17 August, 15 September, 16 October, 13 November, 13 December and 31 December 2027. From about 21:00 to sunrise, 200 baht cash at the gate. Dates can move a day for Buddhist holy days.
- Half Moon Festival, Ban Tai: 4 to 5 October, 19 October, 3 November, 17 November, 2 to 3 December and 16 to 17 December 2026, with a beach-club day from mid-afternoon at Harmony Beach Club on the Ban Tai road and, on the two-day dates, the jungle night at the Magic Forest from about 21:00 to sunrise.
- Thong Sala Saturday Walking Street: every Saturday from about 16:00 to 22:00 in the old market streets by the pier, Thai vendors only, food stalls, crafts and clothes.
- Songkran, 13 to 15 April: the Thai new year and the water fight. Many small businesses close for a day.
- Loy Krathong, the November full moon: floated lanterns and krathongs on the beaches; in 2026 it coincides with the 24 November party week.
- Ang Thong marine park closure, usually 1 November to 15 December, decided each year on the sea conditions.
Where to stay
Thong Sala
The island's only town and its main pier, on the south-west coast: the ferries from Samui, Surat Thani and Koh Tao come in here, the hospitals are here, and so are the island's most ambitious kitchens and the Saturday walking street. It is not a beach town, though Ao Nai Wok just north of the pier has a quiet stretch of sand and a lagoon. Sleep here for a night on either end of the trip or if you want restaurants on foot; otherwise use it as the hub it is.
Best for: Ferries · Restaurants · The Saturday market · A car-free night
No real beach. The pier road is busy when boats land, and every songthaew on the island charges from here.
Ban Tai and Ban Khai
The south-coast road between Thong Sala and Haad Rin, eleven kilometres of villages, coconut groves and long shallow beaches facing Koh Samui. It has Fisherman's, the original Bubba's, the Italian at Fabio's and the Half Moon venues, plus the Wat Khao Tham meditation hill. The beach is wide and calm but shallow at low tide; the point is the road, the food and the price.
Best for: Value · Food on the road · The Half Moon nights · Families with a car
The sea goes out a long way at low tide. Traffic on the road on party nights.
Haad Rin
The southern tip, a neck of land with a beach on each side: Haad Rin Nok, Sunrise Beach, facing east, where the Full Moon Party is held, and Haad Rin Nai, Sunset Beach, facing west across to Samui, calmer and better for swimming. Between them a grid of lanes with hostels, bars, tattoo shops and a branch of Nira's bakery. On a party night this is one of the loudest places in Thailand; the other 350 nights it is a beach town that has seen things. The Haad Rin Queen from Samui's Big Buddha pier lands here, and longtails leave from the Sunrise side for the east-coast beaches.
Best for: The party · Budget rooms · Longtails to Haad Yuan · An open-sea sunrise
Minimum stays of three to five nights around each Full Moon at most hotels, seven over New Year. Rip currents and red-flag swimming bans on Sunrise Beach in rough weather, and the drownings that happen when they are ignored. Broken glass on the sand after a party.
Srithanu, Hin Kong and Haad Chao Phao
The west coast's middle stretch, a quarter of an hour north of Thong Sala: a road of yoga shalas, retreat centres, vegan cafes, cacao ceremonies and long-stay villas that has become the island's second identity. Zen Beach at Srithanu is the sunset gathering, Haad Chao Phao and Secret Beach are the swims, and the Chabad house is on the Hin Kong road to the south. Orion Healing and Samma Karuna are the two big schools. If you have a month, this is where you spend it.
Best for: Yoga and retreats · Sunsets · Long stays · Vegan food
The beaches are narrow and rocky in places, and the scene can feel like a village of the converted. Restaurants close and open every season here; check before you drive.
Haad Yao and Haad Salad
The two classic bays of the north-west: Haad Yao a long curve of white sand with a reef along it and Bubba's roastery behind it, Haad Salad a smaller and calmer bay with the shallowest, easiest snorkelling on the island and a hillside of mid-range resorts. Haad Yao has open water under the sunset for most of the year by our ray cast, with the Ang Thong line under the sun in the winter months and its own southern headland taking the last light around the December solstice; Haad Salad is a cove, and its headlands take the sun ten to sixteen minutes before the almanac time. Fifteen to twenty minutes from Thong Sala.
Best for: Beach days · Snorkelling from the sand · Couples · Families
A steep road in and out of Haad Salad. Little to do after dinner.
Mae Haad and Koh Ma
The north-west corner, where a sandbar joins the beach to Koh Ma, a small island with the best snorkelling reachable on foot on Koh Phangan: coral a short swim out, parrotfish, and reef sharks and turtles on a good day. Walk the sandbar at low tide, snorkel at high. A few small resorts, and Three Sixty Bar on the hill for the view.
Best for: Snorkelling · Quiet · Sunsets from the sandbar
The reef is shallow and gets damaged by feet; do not stand on it. Few places to eat.
Chaloklum and Bottle Beach
The north coast: Chaloklum is the island's fishing village, a deep bay with a pier, dive boats leaving for Sail Rock at ten each morning, seafood at the pier and a Chinese temple on the hill. From here the longtails run to Bottle Beach, Haad Khuat, a bay with no road, one line of bungalows and, by our ray cast, a ridge of nearly 400 m to its west that takes the sunset early. Fifteen minutes from Thong Sala by the cross-island road.
Best for: Diving · Seafood · Bottle Beach · A village that is not for tourists
The bay faces north and its own headlands cut off the sunset for much of the year. Longtails to Bottle Beach stop in a swell.
Thong Nai Pan
Two bays in the north-east, Noi and Yai, reached by a steep road over the hills, with the island's best sand and its best hotels side by side on Noi: Anantara Rasananda, Santhiya, Panviman and Buri Rasa. Both bays face east, so the sun comes up out of the sea and goes down behind the ridge. The most expensive corner of the island, and the one most people would pick for a honeymoon.
Best for: The best hotels · Honeymoons · Sunrise from the beach · Families
Thirty-five to forty minutes from the pier by road, and Lomprayah's hotel transfers exclude the Thong Nai Pan zone; the hotels run their own. No sunset.
HUAHIN PILOT LAND & REAL ESTATE DRONER · PexelsThe east coast: Haad Yuan, Haad Thian and Than Sadet
A string of bays north of Haad Rin, most with no road worth the name, reached by longtail from Haad Rin's Sunrise Beach in fifteen minutes or by a rough four-wheel-drive track. Haad Yuan and Haad Thian have bungalows, a weekend party each and nothing else; Than Sadet, the one bay with a concrete road in from Ban Tai, has the waterfall and the rocks where King Chulalongkorn carved his monogram in 1888. The island as it was thirty years ago, at the price of a boat that does not go when the sea is up.
Best for: Seclusion · Bungalows · The waterfall and the royal rocks
Boat-only in practice, at 150 to 400 baht a head depending on the season and the boatman, and no boats in the monsoon swell.

Essential experiences
Haad Rin Nok, Sunrise Beach
The party beach on the east side of the Haad Rin neck: 800 m of sand facing open sea, which by our ray cast gives an unobstructed sunrise on every day of the year, and the site of the Full Moon Party since the late 1980s. On a normal morning it is a good swimming beach with a shore break; on a party morning it is being cleaned, and the sunrise is the quiet side of the island's most famous beach. Red flags mean the swell is up and the rip is running; people have drowned here ignoring them.
Thong Nai Pan Noi and Yai
The two bays of the north-east, the small one and the big one, with the finest sand on the island, calm water inside the headlands for most of the year and the top hotels along Noi. Both face east, so the sun rises out of the sea in front of the hotels and sets behind the ridge; by our ray cast the sunrise from Noi is on open water all year. Thirty-five to forty minutes from Thong Sala by a steep road that Lomprayah's hotel transfers refuse.
Bottle Beach, Haad Khuat
A north-coast bay with no road: a longtail from Chaloklum takes about fifteen minutes and 150 baht a head, or you walk the jungle trail from the end of the road at Haad Khom, 2 km and an hour to an hour and a half of steep path. One resort, a few bungalow places, a pool and a beach that is yours at dusk. Our ray cast puts hills of 380 to 430 m immediately behind the bay, so the sun leaves the beach 53 to 86 minutes before the almanac sunset and arrives 31 to 79 minutes after sunrise; you come for the water and the quiet, not the light.
Chaloklum fishing village
The island's working harbour on the deep north bay: longtails and squid boats at the pier, the dive boats loading at ten, seafood restaurants along the water, a Chinese temple on the hill above and a beach that is better for looking than swimming. It is the base for Sail Rock and for Bottle Beach, and the one village on the island where the economy is not you. Fifteen minutes from Thong Sala by the cross-island road.
Koh Ma and Mae Haad
A sandbar joins Mae Haad beach in the north-west corner to Koh Ma, a small forested island, and the reef on either side of the bar is the best snorkelling reachable without a boat on Koh Phangan: coral 30 m from the sand, parrotfish and butterflyfish, blacktip reef sharks and turtles reported on good days. Walk the bar at low tide, snorkel at high, and do not stand on the coral. Best visibility from December to April.
Haad Yuan, Haad Thian and the east-coast bays
Fifteen minutes by longtail north from Haad Rin's Sunrise Beach, a string of bays with bungalows and no road: Haad Yuan, then Haad Thian, then Haad Why Nam. Each has a bar that runs one party a week, and otherwise nothing but sand, boulders and the boat back. Fares are by negotiation, 150 to 400 baht a person depending on the season and how full the boat is, and the boats do not run in a monsoon swell; the sunrise from Haad Yuan, like Haad Rin's, is on open water all year by our ray cast.
Max Mishin · PexelsPhaeng Waterfall and the Domsila viewpoint
The island's main waterfall, inside the Than Sadet-Koh Phangan National Park in the middle of the island, a fifteen-minute walk from the park entrance to the lower tier and a steep fifteen minutes more to Domsila, a rock platform with the whole island and Koh Samui below it. Best from October to January, after the monsoon rains; in the dry months from March to September the fall can shrink to a trickle and the viewpoint is the reason to come. Sources disagree on whether a fee is collected at Phaeng: one says free with a donation box, another says 100 baht, and the park authority's own portal was down when we tried it, so carry cash.
Khao Ra, the summit
The highest point on Koh Phangan, which the SRTM elevation model puts at 627 m, the figure most sources use, though Wikipedia's park entry says 635. A two-to-three-hour climb through jungle from the trailhead near Phaeng, 20 baht at the gate, with a 360-degree view from the top: Chaloklum and Koh Tao to the north, Thong Nai Pan to the east, Koh Samui to the south. By our ray cast the summit has the sea under the sunset on every day of the year, but nobody should be up there after dark; go for the morning.
Than Sadet waterfall and the royal inscriptions
The royal stream on the east coast, where King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, landed on 31 August 1888 and returned as many as fourteen times before 1909, carving his monogram on the rocks by the mouth of the river; later kings added theirs. A trail of about 3 km links three falls, and the beach at the bottom is the quietest on the east side. Reached by the concrete road from Ban Tai on a scooter or by longtail; the national park headquarters is here.
Wat Phu Khao Noi
The oldest temple on the island, on a small hill by the government hospital outside Thong Sala, with a central chedi ringed by eight smaller ones in different styles and a stone footprint attributed to the founding monk. Free, quiet and five minutes from the pier; go in the late afternoon, when the light is on the chedis and the island is spread out below.
Thong Sala Saturday Walking Street
Every Saturday from about four in the afternoon the old market streets behind the Thong Sala pier close to traffic and fill with stalls: grilled squid and fish, som tam, kanom jeen, roti, fruit, clothes and crafts, with only Thai vendors allowed to trade. It is the island's one evening that belongs to everyone, locals and visitors, and the cheapest good dinner on Koh Phangan. Runs to about ten.
Zen Beach, Srithanu
The west coast's sunset gathering: a small beach at the north end of Srithanu village where, by every account, the yoga crowd comes down at six with drums, hoops and cameras. By our ray cast the sun goes into open water here from March to mid-October; from late October to late February it sets onto or beside the Ang Thong archipelago, a low dark line on the horizon 32 to 36 km out, and from about 9 December to 3 January its tallest island stands under the disc. Not a swimming beach; a watching one.
Anetta Kolesnikova · PexelsSecret Beach, Haad Son
A small west-coast cove just north of Haad Chao Phao, reached down a steep lane past a resort, with a beach bar built onto the rocks at its northern end and Three Sixty Bar on the hill above. Good swimming at high tide, rocky at low, and a proper sunset spot with the sea in front of it.
Wat Khao Tham, the meditation hill
A forest temple on a hill above Ban Tai that ran ten-day silent retreats in English for foreigners for more than thirty years, in the tradition of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, with registration in person only. Its long-time lay teachers now also lead retreats at other centres on the island, and one report says the original property changed hands in 2025, so treat the retreat schedule as something to confirm on the ground rather than a fixture. The temple and the view are still there.

Gaeng som
The sour-hot orange curry of the south, with fish and green papaya or pineapple, thin and sharp with tamarind and turmeric. The dish to order at a village restaurant before anything with coconut cream in it.
Pla pao
Whole fish, usually tilapia or sea bass, packed in salt and grilled over coals, sold at the Saturday walking street and the Chaloklum pier restaurants by weight. Eaten with a chilli-lime dip and a plate of herbs.
Khao yam
The southern rice salad: rice with shredded dried fish, toasted coconut, lemongrass, kaffir lime, pomelo and a dark fish sauce dressing, mixed at the table. A breakfast or lunch dish; look for it at the market and at Thai-run guesthouses.
Kanom jeen
Fresh rice noodles with a ladle of curry, on Koh Phangan most often a fish curry or a green curry, with a basket of raw vegetables and herbs. The island's cheapest hot meal, 50 to 60 baht from a stall.
Gu Ko · PexelsMassaman
The Muslim-Thai curry of the south, beef or chicken with potato, peanuts and a sweet-sour gravy. Every restaurant in Srithanu does a vegetable version; the good ones are still in the villages.
Aditya Oberai · PexelsCoconut and coconut everything
The plantations that cover the island still send coconuts to the mainland, and the local shake, ice cream and curry pastes taste of it. A fresh green coconut at a roadside stall is 30 to 50 baht.
Thai restaurants on the island serve from mid-morning to about ten at night, and the best village kitchens close early. Sharing is the norm: order dishes for the table with rice. Tipping is not expected but small change is welcome; the resort restaurants add a service charge and 7 percent VAT, and DAO quotes its menu before both. Cash still rules the walking street, the pier restaurants and the longtails; carry it.

fine-diningSixteen seats around a chef's table in a restored Thai house five minutes from the pier, four nights a week, one ten-course tasting menu at 3,000 baht before 7 percent VAT and service, with a fish-only version and wine pairings of four or five glasses at 2,000 or 2,500 baht. Nir Mesika studied at the Bishulim school in Tel Aviv and opened Zizi Limona there and Timna in New York before moving to Koh Phangan in 2023; the food is Levantine in method and Gulf-of-Thailand in ingredient. Over-16s only, reservations required, no gluten-free, dairy-free or vegan menus, and a 1,000 baht a head deposit for parties of three or more.

Fisherman's Restaurant and Bar
institutionOn the sand at Ban Tai since 2007, built by Lek, a chef from a local fishing family, out of natural materials and the family's old longtails, which are now the seating. Crab curry, barracuda, fish cakes and a fish pie for the homesick, with the lights of Koh Samui across the water. Early tables from 18:00 to 19:30 are two-hour sittings and parties of more than six should call ahead.

Bubba's Coffee
cafeThe island's coffee company since 2015, roasting beans from the northern Thai hills at its Haad Yao cafe and serving them with all-day breakfast at three places: the original in Ban Tai, the roastery at Haad Yao between the villas and the bay, and the newest by the Thong Sala pier, which is where you go straight off the boat. All three open 07:00 to 17:00 every day.

bakeryA Thong Sala institution on the pier road, baking since the 1980s: croissants, German breads, cakes and a long breakfast menu that covers the English, the German and the French versions, plus Thai dishes. A second branch on the Haad Rin walking street feeds the party crowd. We could not read an official page; the details are from listings and the map.

Fabio's
casualAn Italian on the Ban Tai main road since 2007, across from a coffee lounge, baking its own bread daily and rolling its own egg pasta; lasagne, seafood tagliatelle and pizza, with a dessert thrown in. Popular enough, by its reviews, that a table at eight in high season needs a call. Details come from listings and the restaurant's Facebook page rather than a site of its own.

Phorn Restaurant
casualA family seafood restaurant with indoor and outdoor tables overlooking the Chaloklum pier: calamari, red snapper, king prawns and the standard Thai menu, plus burgers and an English breakfast for the divers. The kind of place that is on every list for the same reason: reviewers call it clean and cheap, and the boats it buys from are tied up in front of it.

Sunrises
Pok Rie · PexelsHaad Rin Nok: open sea every morning
The party beach faces east into nothing, and our ray cast finds no land above the sea horizon at any sunrise bearing of the year, from about 66 degrees at the June solstice to 114 in December. The sun is on the sand one or two minutes after the almanac time on every date we checked. On the morning after a party you share it with the cleaners and the last dancers; on any other morning it is the best-kept secret of the island's most famous beach.
Year-round · On foot from any Haad Rin hotel; 17 minutes by road from Thong Sala. · The longtails moored off the northern end give a foreground; after a party, wait for the sand to be raked.
André Cook · PexelsThong Nai Pan Noi: the sun out of the sea in front of the hotels
The best beach on the island faces the sunrise, and the ray cast from the middle of Noi finds open water across the whole arc; the headlands on either side stay well outside it. From a beachfront room at Anantara or Buri Rasa it is in front of the bed, and the bay is sheltered by its headlands at that hour for most of the year. The price is that this coast never sees a sunset, which goes behind the ridge at the back of the bay.
Year-round; calmest from February to September · On foot from the Thong Nai Pan hotels; 35 minutes by road from Thong Sala or Haad Rin. · The longtails at the southern end and the rocks below Panviman frame the low sun.
Haad Yuan: the boat-only sunrise
Fifteen minutes by longtail from Haad Rin, the first of the east-coast bays faces the same open sea, and the ray cast finds it as clear as Haad Rin Nok on every date. The difference is the company: a few bungalows, one bar, and whoever slept there. Sleep there; the boats do not run before the sun.
Year-round, weather permitting; no boats in a monsoon swell · Longtail from Haad Rin Nok at 150 to 400 baht a person, or the rough track for four-wheel-drives only. · The granite boulders at the southern end of the bay against the sun.
Sunsets
Zen Beach, Srithanu: open water in summer, Ang Thong under the winter sun
The sunset bearing on Koh Phangan swings from about 246 degrees at the December solstice to 294 at the June one. From Zen Beach the ray cast finds open sea from bearing 260 upward, which is every sunset from early March to mid-October. Below that sits the Ang Thong archipelago, 32 to 36 km west-south-west, a low dark line on the horizon whose islands stand up to 0.4 degrees above it: from about 21 October to 21 February the sun goes down onto or just beside one island or another, and from about 9 December to 3 January the tallest of them, Ko Wua Ta Lap at the southern end of the chain, is under the disc itself. This is the beach the west coast walks to at six, drums included.
Year-round; the Ang Thong silhouette from late October to late February, the tallest island under the sun from about 9 December to 3 January · On foot from Srithanu; 11 minutes by road from Thong Sala. · A longer lens from November to February puts the islands under the sun; the rest of the year the longtails moored off the beach are the subject.
Haad Yao: open sea from March to October
The long bay north of Srithanu keeps the sunset on open water from early March to the end of October by our ray cast, with the last sun within a minute of the almanac time. In the winter months the Ang Thong islands sit as low bumps under or beside the setting sun, and around the December solstice, from about 7 December to 5 January, the sun goes down behind the bay's own southern headland from the middle of the beach; walk north for those weeks. Bubba's roastery is behind the beach for the coffee before, and the reef along the bay for the snorkel before that.
March to October for the clean horizon; November to February for the Ang Thong silhouette · 15 minutes by road from Thong Sala; walkable from the Haad Yao hotels. · The northern headland gives a dark edge to the frame; walk to the middle of the bay for the clean horizon.
Amsterdam Bar: the archipelago from 50 m up
A hillside bar on the Hin Kong road south of Hin Kong, up a steep lane off the coast road, with cushions on terraces and the whole Gulf in front; some 2026 reports mention an entry charge in high season, so check before you climb. From 50 m up the sea horizon drops and the Ang Thong islands stand clear of it as a chain across bearings 247 to 265. By our half-degree ray cast the sun goes down behind the tallest islands of the chain, sampled at 300 to 350 m from here, from about 15 January to 3 February and 9 to 27 November, sits on or beside the lower islands on and off from early October to early March, and sets into open water from 10 March to 4 October. The classic west-coast sunset with a drink, and busy for it.
Year-round; behind the tallest Ang Thong island from about 15 January to 3 February and 9 to 27 November; open water from mid-March to early October · Ten minutes by road from Thong Sala and from Srithanu; the lane up is steep for a scooter. · The island chain is the picture; a longer lens from the top terrace.
Vitaly Gariev · PexelsHaad Rin Nai, Sunset Beach: Samui to the left, Ang Thong under the sun
The calmer side of the Haad Rin neck faces west with Koh Samui filling the view to the south-west and open sea under the sunset. The ray cast finds the sun on the water on every sampled date, with one exception worth knowing: an Ang Thong peak of 350 m sits 43 km out at bearing 260, and the sun goes down behind it for about four days around 23 February and three around 19 October. The rest of the year the islands are bumps beside the disc. A good place to be at six on a party night, before the other beach starts.
Year-round · On foot from Haad Rin; the Haad Rin Queen pier is at the southern end. · The Samui hills give the left of the frame; the ferry crossing at dusk gives the middle.
Thong Sala pier: behind Koh Tae Nai for half the year
The pier is where most people see their first Koh Phangan sunset, waiting for a songthaew, and it is worth knowing what they are looking at. Koh Tae Nai, the small wooded island a kilometre west of the pier, sits under the sun from about 26 January to 16 April and from 27 August to 16 November, when the last direct light goes two to fourteen minutes before the almanac time. From mid-April to late August and from mid-November to late January the sun sets into open water off the pier. Ten minutes north at Hin Kong or Srithanu it is open all year.
Mid-April to late August and mid-November to late January for the water; otherwise walk north · On foot from anywhere in Thong Sala. · The moored ferries and the pier lights; not a clean horizon.
Chaloklum and Bottle Beach: the north coast loses the sun early
Two places people expect a sunset and do not get one. Chaloklum bay faces north, and the ray cast finds its western headland, 130 to 300 m high within 2 km, under the sun on every date of the year, taking the last light 7 minutes early at midsummer and up to 32 minutes early in December. Bottle Beach is worse: hills of 380 to 430 m rise straight behind the bay, and the sun leaves the sand 53 to 86 minutes before the almanac sunset all year, and does not reach it until 31 to 79 minutes after sunrise. Go to both for the water and the village; for the light, be on the west coast.
None for the sunset itself; the afterglow over the bay is the picture · Chaloklum is 15 minutes from Thong Sala by road; Bottle Beach is a longtail from the Chaloklum pier. · At Chaloklum the fishing boats in the shadowed bay against the lit sky.

Ang Thong National Marine Park
Forty-two limestone islands 35 km west of Thong Sala, a marine park since 1980 with the Emerald Lagoon on Koh Mae Ko, the viewpoint climb on Koh Wua Ta Lap and kayaking between the cliffs. Tours leave Thong Sala daily in season by speedboat, about 2,200 baht a person with lunch, snorkelling and kayaks, and the park fee of 300 baht for foreign adults and 150 for children is paid separately at the park. The park is usually closed from 1 November to 15 December, decided on the sea; December to April is the calm window.

mirthe diender · PexelsSail Rock and Koh Tao
Sail Rock is the pinnacle between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, about 18 km north of Chaloklum, with a swim-through chimney, schooling barracuda and trevally and the occasional whale shark; it is widely rated the best dive site in the Gulf and it is closer from Phangan than from Tao. The Chaloklum dive boats leave at ten and are back at four, an hour and a quarter each way, two dives for 3,200 baht with lunch on board, or a first dive for 4,200. For Koh Tao itself, Lomprayah's catamaran from Thong Sala takes about two hours for 800 baht each way, which makes a long day or a better overnight.
About an hour and a quarter to Sail Rock by dive boat; about two hours to Koh Tao by catamaran from hotel pickup · A day for Sail Rock; a night or two for Koh Tao
Anna Zviahina 🇺🇦 · PexelsKoh Samui
The big island is thirty minutes away by catamaran and easy to do as a day: Lomprayah from Thong Sala to Nathon or Bangrak for 550 baht pier to pier, or the Haad Rin Queen from Haad Rin to the Big Buddha pier for about 250 to 350 baht. From Bangrak the Big Buddha, Fisherman's Village at Bophut and the Chaweng strip are all within a short taxi. Our Koh Samui guide covers the island; the point of the trip from Phangan is to see what you chose not to stay on.

From the Chaloklum pier a longtail runs east along the coast to Haad Khom and on to Bottle Beach in about fifteen minutes, 150 baht a head each way, with boats back roughly hourly. Walk one way on the jungle trail if you want to earn the swim. Remember the geometry: the sun leaves Bottle Beach nearly an hour early, so this is a morning-and-lunch trip, not a sunset one.

Getting around
- Koh Phangan has no airport. From Israel the route is El Al's nonstop to Bangkok, usually twice a night around 22:20 and 00:55 in the week of publication, with Arkia once in that window, then either Bangkok Airways to Koh Samui and a catamaran, or a budget carrier to Surat Thani and a bus-and-ferry package. There were no rows to Samui or Surat Thani on the Ben Gurion board, and Phuket, which El Al and Arkia also fly, is on the wrong coast.
- Via Samui: Bangkok Airways owns Samui airport and flies almost every service into it, and its fares are the premium on the route. From the airport, Lomprayah sells the van-and-catamaran to Thong Sala for 700 baht with departures from the Samui piers roughly hourly between 07:00 and 17:00, two to three hours door to door; Seatran runs from Bangrak and the Haad Rin Queen from the Big Buddha pier next to it to Haad Rin.
- Via Surat Thani: Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion fly from Bangkok's Don Mueang in about 75 minutes, and Lomprayah's package from Surat Thani airport to Thong Sala is 1,000 baht by bus and boat; from the Donsak pier the Raja Ferry crosses in two and a half hours for 280 baht, with a 05:00 sailing that lands at 07:30. Lomprayah also sells Bangkok to Thong Sala by bus and boat for 1,850 baht, about fifteen hours.
- Since 15 September 2026 Israeli passport holders enter Thailand visa-free for 30 days, not 60: the change was published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August and Israel is on the list of 60 countries covered. Tourists already in the country on 15 September keep the stay they were given. An extension of up to 30 days can be requested at an immigration office, subject to approval; entries by land under the exemption are limited to two a year, which does not affect anyone flying in.
- Every foreign arrival must file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days before landing. It is free, it replaced the paper TM6 on 1 May 2025, it is a new submission for every entry, and the Immigration Bureau's optional THIM app can also file it. Israel's foreign ministry recommendations for Thailand say the same thing and add a warning about non-official sites that charge for it.
- Israel's National Security Council rates the south of Thailand at level 4, high threat, and says in the same line that the islands are excluded; the rest of the country, Koh Phangan included, is level 2, an occasional threat that calls for extra care. The foreign ministry's recommendations in the same dataset, last updated on 14 September 2026, add: keep away from the Thai-Cambodian border, do not smoke on Thai beaches, do not carry an e-cigarette or a satellite phone, both illegal, bring in tobacco only within the legal limit, hold an onward ticket and do not overstay.
- The island runs on scooters: 150 baht a day for a small automatic, 250 for a Click, 450 for a PCX, less by the week. Thailand requires a motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit under the 1949 convention to ride legally and for your insurance to pay; Koh Phangan's hill roads, the Thong Nai Pan road above all, are where the island's worst accidents happen, and the island's hospitals, First Western in Thong Sala and the government hospital north of town, see them daily. Helmet, daylight, sober, and not after the party.
- Songthaews, the shared pickups, wait at the Thong Sala pier and charge per person by zone: about 100 to 150 baht to Haad Rin or the west-coast beaches, more to Thong Nai Pan. They fill before they leave. A private taxi is 200 to 300 baht for the same runs, more at night and around the party.
- Lomprayah sells an island transfer for 200 baht a head anywhere except Thong Nai Pan, which its timetable excludes in print; the Thong Nai Pan hotels run their own transfers, Anantara at 1,500 baht a car from the pier.
- Longtails are the road for the north and east coasts: Chaloklum to Bottle Beach at about 150 baht a person, Haad Rin to Haad Yuan and Haad Thian at 150 to 400 depending on the season and the boatman. None run in a monsoon swell, and a boat that goes out against a small-craft warning is the one to refuse; a Korean tourist died off Koh Phangan in December 2024 on exactly that boat.
- Between Samui and Phangan: Lomprayah from Thong Sala to Nathon, Bangrak or Pralarn for 550 baht pier to pier and 700 with a hotel pickup, Seatran from Bangrak to Thong Sala at about 300 baht three times a day, and the Haad Rin Queen from the Big Buddha pier to Haad Rin at about 250 to 350 baht four times a day; the last two are from booking listings, because neither operator publishes a timetable we could read.
- To Koh Tao: Lomprayah from Thong Sala at 07:30, 12:00 and 15:45 for 800 baht, about two hours; on to Chumphon for 1,450 baht with the bus.
Things worth knowing
- · Arriving with a 60-day plan. Since 15 September 2026 the visa exemption is 30 days; a longer stay needs the extension at immigration or a visa before you fly.
- · Not filing the digital arrival card. It is required within three days before landing and it is free.
- · Booking Haad Rin for a week that includes a Full Moon date without reading the minimum stay: five nights in high season at Cocohut and three in low season, no check-in or check-out on the day before or after a party, seven nights last New Year, and similar rules at its neighbours.
- · Planning Ang Thong in November. The park is usually closed from 1 November to 15 December.
- · Booking Bottle Beach or Chaloklum for the sunset. Our ray cast puts the sun behind their own hills 7 to 86 minutes before the almanac time on every day of the year; the west coast from Hin Kong to Haad Yao keeps the sun on the sea or on the far Ang Thong line.
- · Renting a scooter without a motorcycle licence and an IDP, which voids most travel insurance on the island's roads, and riding the Thong Nai Pan road at night.
- · Expecting the ferry company's van to deliver you to Thong Nai Pan. Lomprayah's hotel transfer excludes that zone in print; the hotels do it themselves.
- · Swimming under a red flag at Haad Rin, or at dusk anywhere in the box jellyfish months.

Add the 300 baht park fee to any Ang Thong day, 200 baht cash for the party, and whatever the minimum stay around a full moon costs you in nights. · 1 USD = THB 34 (14 Oct 2026)

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to go to Koh Phangan?
February to April: the north-east monsoon has passed, the Ko Samui weather station averages only 46 to 64 mm of rain a month, the sea is flat and clear and the Ang Thong marine park is open. Late June to early September is the second window, warm and mostly dry while Phuket is wet. Late October to early December is the one to avoid unless the party is the point: November averages 495 mm and the small boats stop.
When are the Full Moon Parties?
The remaining 2026 dates are 26 September, 27 October, 24 November, 24 December and 31 December. In 2027: 22 January, 22 February, 22 March, 21 April, 21 May, 19 June, 20 July, 17 August, 15 September, 16 October, 13 November, 13 December and 31 December. The party runs from about 21:00 to sunrise on Haad Rin Nok, entry is 200 baht cash at the gate, and dates can move a day to avoid Buddhist holy days.
How do we get to Koh Phangan from Israel?
El Al flies nonstop to Bangkok most nights, and Arkia on some. From Bangkok either fly Bangkok Airways to Koh Samui and take the catamaran from the airport package, two to three hours door to door for 700 baht, or fly a budget airline to Surat Thani and take the bus-and-boat package for 1,000 baht, about four hours. There is no airport on Koh Phangan and no flight from Israel to Samui or Surat Thani.
Do Israelis need a visa for Thailand?
No, but the exemption changed on 15 September 2026: it is now 30 days, not 60, for Israelis and about 60 other nationalities. An extension of up to 30 days can be requested at an immigration office, subject to approval. Everyone must also file the free digital arrival card online within three days before landing.
Koh Phangan or Koh Samui?
Samui has the airport, the big resorts, the Michelin restaurants and the traffic; Phangan has the same sea for less money, no airport, a fishing village and a yoga coast, and one night a month that Samui does not want. For a first Thai beach with children and short transfers, Samui. For couples, divers, long stays and anyone who has already done a resort island, Phangan. Thirty minutes of catamaran separate them, so a week can do both.
Where should we stay?
The west coast between Hin Kong and Haad Yao for sunsets, villages and value; Thong Nai Pan for the best beach and the best hotels, with a forty-minute road and no sunset; Haad Rin for the party night only. Chaloklum suits divers. Bottle Beach and the east-coast bays are for a night or two of switching off, and only when the sea is calm.
Which beach has the best sunset?
By our ray cast, the west coast from Hin Kong to Haad Yao has open water under the sun from March to mid-October and the low line of the Ang Thong islands under or beside it from late October to late February, with Zen Beach at Srithanu the gathering place and Amsterdam Bar the terrace. The Thong Sala pier loses the sun behind the island of Koh Tae Nai from late January to mid-April and late August to mid-November. Chaloklum and Bottle Beach on the north coast never get a sea sunset; their own hills take the sun 7 to 86 minutes early.
Is Koh Phangan safe?
Israel's National Security Council rates the south of Thailand at level 4 and excludes the islands from that zone; the rest of the country, Koh Phangan included, is level 2, an occasional threat. The real risks on the island are the road, the sea and the party: scooter accidents are the island's hospitals' daily business, rip currents at Haad Rin have drowned swimmers who ignored the red flags, and a longtail that goes out against a small-craft warning is the one that capsizes. Box jellyfish are a small seasonal risk. Theft at the party is common enough that every guide says the same thing: take only cash.
Can we do Ang Thong from Koh Phangan?
Yes, and the crossing is shorter than from Samui: the licensed operators pick up on Koh Phangan and run speedboat days for about 2,200 baht with lunch, kayaks and snorkelling, plus the 300 baht park fee paid at the park. The park is usually closed from 1 November to 15 December; December to April is the calm season.
